Conducting

A course of lessons introducing the student to many of the skills required by an orchestral conductor including:

  • stick technique
  • score reading, analysis and preparation
  • rehearsal scheduling

Suitable for all aspiring conductors including:

  • complete beginners
  • choral directors wishing to increase confidence with orchestras
  • amateurs facing professionals or simply aiming to improve

Subject to availability this course may culminate in a masterclass with an amateur symphony orchestra.

The number and duration of the lessons to be agreed as appropriate. Individuals can be considered but a class of two or three is better as this allows one to observe and learn from the actions of others. Where possible, such classes will be arranged.

 

 

Music history and appreciation

A course of lessons either for individuals or a class.

These can either cover a specific agreed musical topic or give a general overview of music for the last 500 years.

Recorded music will be used as will any appropriate performances which coincide with the course and these will be introduced and explained for those able to attend.

The ability to read music is NOT required.

 

Music theory  

Single lessons or a course either for individuals or a class.

These can cover all levels of theory for:

  • Associated Board Exams
  • School Exams
  • Music College or Conservatoire entrance
  • General interest (e.g. score reading for enhanced listening
